How is AHDS treated in dogs?

Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS), previously called HGE, is managed primarily with prompt IV fluids and supportive care guided by perfusion and ongoing losses.

● WHAT'S DOCUMENTED

Use the current syndrome name

AHDS replaces the older HGE terminology. The syndrome involves acute hemorrhagic diarrhea, often with vomiting and hemoconcentration.

Treat volume loss and reassess the need for antibiotics

Fluid needs reflect the examination, hydration and continuing gastrointestinal losses. Antiemetics may be part of supportive treatment.

Antimicrobials are reserved for selected severe presentations, such as concern for sepsis or relevant leukogram abnormalities, rather than routine use for every dog.
